Pest-Free Christmas Decor

Keep holiday decorations free of insects and rodents with simple inspection, storage, and cleaning tips for a worry-free festive season.

Why and How Holiday Decor Can Bring Unwanted Guests

The festive season often means bringing out cozy decorations, greenery, and holiday cheer — but it can also unintentionally invite pests into your home. Boxes stored in attics, basements, or garages can become nest sites for rodents or hiding spots for insects. Natural trees, wreaths, and plants may already harbor spiders, mites, or other critters — and once inside a warm house, those pests can emerge. Especially in regions like Florida, where warmth persists, this risk is elevated all holiday long.

Inspect Before You Bring It In! Check Trees, Wreaths & Greenery

If you use a real Christmas tree, wreaths, garlands, or other natural decor, inspect them carefully before bringing them indoors. Look for creepy-crawlies, webs, or egg sacs. A good shake outdoors can dislodge hidden insects.

Artificial trees or decor should also be checked — dust mites, spiders, or other pests may have settled in storage.

Examine Stored Decorations & Containers

Decorations stored in dark or seldom-visited areas (attics, garages, basements) are especially vulnerable. Before hauling them out, examine containers for signs of rodent activity — droppings, chewed materials, or gnaw marks

If you find evidence of pests, clean or discard the affected items before using them.

Store Decorations Smartly to Prevent Infestations

Avoid cardboard boxes, which are easy for rodents and insects to chew through or nest in. Opt instead for sturdy plastic bins with tightly latching lids — they’re better at keeping pests out long term.

Keep Storage Areas Clean and Dry

Moisture and clutter attract pests. Before storing or retrieving decorations, clean the space thoroughly: vacuum out dust, remove debris, and reduce clutter that could offer hiding spots.

Food, Treats & Outdoor Decor: Extra Attention Needed

Seasonal foods and sweets — cookies, candies, nuts — often lead to extra activity in kitchens and pantries. Even crumbs or unattended trays can lure ants, rodents, and pantry pests. Store food in sealed containers and clean up promptly after festive meals.

Outdoor Decorations & Plants

Wreaths, garlands, potted plants, and other outdoor decor can attract critters before and after holiday use. Examine them for signs of insects or nesting rodents before bringing items inside. For plants, inspect soil and leaves for pests.

After the Holidays: Clean-Up and Long-Term Prevention

Once the season ends:

  • Clean each decoration thoroughly before storing. Remove dust, sap, or other residues that might attract pests.
  • Store decor in sealed, pest-resistant containers — plastic bins or storage bags — and avoid damp, cluttered spaces.
  • Check storage areas regularly for signs of insect or rodent activity. Early detection helps avoid bigger infestations later.

When to Consider Professional Help

If you find evidence of infestation — rodent droppings, nests, chewed wiring or insulation, active insects — it may be time to call in a licensed pest control professional. Their experience can help identify hidden problems and provide effective treatment before pests spread throughout the home.

Don’t let pests turn your festive season into a headache — a few careful steps at the start and end of the holidays can make a big difference.
