Invasive Nutrias | The damage They Cause And How To Protect Your Property
Nutrias are semi-aquatic rodents that love to eat plants, and they do so by digging up lawns and gardens. They also burrow under buildings and cause damage to foundations and property. Nutrias are larger than most other rodents, growing up to two feet long and weighing up to 15 pounds. They are brown or gray with short tails. They are an invasive species that is not native to Florida.
If Nutrias aren't native to Florida, how did they get here?
They are exotic aquatic mammals that were introduced into southern Florida in the 1960s for their fur. The nutria population has exploded since then, and now these large rodents are invading other areas of Florida, including the Tampa Bay Area, damaging wetlands, water quality along the way, retention ponds, and storm trenches.
Nutrias tunnel and burrow causing all kinds of damage. They can undermine levees, damage lawns, and golf courses, eat the roots of plants and trees, and ruin water pumps.
Nutrias have no predators in Florida and have no natural enemies to keep their population in check. Their destructive burrowing behavior destroys native plants and animals that live in the wetlands.
